Can an acoustic imaging technique be used to determine contaminants like small metal pins embedded externally on gold jewelry? I am sceptical bcoz acoustic imaging is generally used for internal scanning and the surface for detection should be plane or regularly curved, which is not the case with jewelry.
I am open to other suggestions.

Radiography is one way that should work. Infrared might also work if the camera is sensitive enough.
